Brighton got its start in 1832, when the Maltby brothers settled along Ore Creek and built a sawmill. The little settlement went by Ore Creek until 1838, when it took the name Brighton. It became a village in 1867 and a full city in 1928, and today it anchors the southeast corner of Livingston County with around 7,400 residents in just under four square miles.
For a small city, Brighton packs a lot in. The Mill Pond sits right in the heart of downtown, ringed by a half-mile boardwalk, the Tridge, the Imagination Station playscape, and The AMP, the waterfront amphitheater rebuilt in 2018 that hosts concerts all summer.
