Walled Lake got its name back in 1825, when early settler Walter Hewitt spotted what looked like a low stone wall along the lake’s edge. It turned out to be a ridge of boulders left under the water by retreating glaciers, but the name stuck.

Crowds poured in from Detroit until the casino burned in 1965 and the park closed in 1968. The city itself incorporated in 1954 and today wraps around its namesake lake with about 7,200 residents.
